Begin your research on the internet by comparing the various rates for cars on sites like , Travelocity or Orbitz. Then, go directly on the site of the company that is offering the best rate and find the telephone number of the booking agent that is close to you. By telephone, you will often be able to negotiate a better price than that appearing on their internet site. Several companies offer discounts to the members of the , members of the golden age, the military etc….
Also, if the size of the car does not have importance, always ask for a small or economical vehicle. Most companies have a large selection of the big luxury cars, so if you ask for a small car you will most likely get a big car for the same price.
Make sure that you inquire about taxes and fees.
If you already have car insurance, there is a good chance that your rental is covered. You can most likely transfer your insurance to the rental, but take care of this before you get to the rental company. It is better to know what is going on before you actually get there.
In addition, if you are paying with a credit card it might cover the cost of insurance so you might not need to buy the insurance that they are selling. (Certain cards independently offer the insurance if you have an ordinary card, gold or platinum). If you make your arrangements in advance from the comfort of your residence or while passing by your travel agency you might have the opportunity to pay with Canadian currency.
A credit card is usually needed for the renting of a car. Also know that most rental companies do not allow you to rent if you are not 21 years of age or older. Each driver must be on record with the rental company. Pay close attention to the mileage it might get you into trouble later. Before taking possession of the car, walk around it and make note of the condition. Look for scratches or dents. You do not want to be held responsible when you return the vehicle. To avoid additional expenses, always turn over the car with a full tank of gas.

Plane trips can be beneficial, but keep in mind the strict regulations. It is necessary that you arrive several hours in advance. You cannot be late! Time is of the essence especially when you have to make a transfer. There are strict security guidelines that you must follow. One example is liquids. They are prohibited unless under a certain amount. Make sure you are well informed BEFORE you make your trip. Also, if you travel with children they make sure they have a ticket. Don’t take a chance.
|
Traveling by car is more economical and flexible. You can leave when you want. No humiliating inspections at the airport, you can leave and arrive at the hour that you choose not when the plane chooses. You do not have to pay extra for people that are with you or children. The price of gas has come down so much that it now costs less than half of what it did in winter of 2008. In addition, you do not have to worry about transportation when you arrive in Florida. There is no limit of baggage like at the airline companies.
On the main road to Florida, you will have the possibility of visiting a multitude of tourist places. Look out for the blue signs on the edge of the roads and visit the “welcome center” of each state. You will discover so many beautiful places.
Do not forget to make sure your car is prepared for the trip before leaving. Try to equip yourself with a “GPS”. It is better than any roadmap. The “GPS” will guide you to your destination and will automatically make any corrections or adjustments if needed.

Traveling with children is not always easy. Don’t forget that you are traveling at their pace not yours. Here is some essential advice for your trip:
Make sure that each child has a valid passport and identity documents. If the child is traveling with only one parent or with a guardian (someone other than the parents ) make sure you have an authentic letter of consent that is signed and dated by the absent parent. Never leave a young child unattended and make sure he/she has a document (a copy). Keep originals with you, that will make it possible to identify him/her in case you get separated. If the child is traveling alone, make arrangements in advance with the airline company so that your child is escorted from the time of departure to the time of arrival. When driving, remember always use a safety seat. If flying with a baby bring a bottle to relieve the pressure in his/her ears. Make sure to bring enough baby products and if your child is taking medication bring a note from the doctor indicating their use.

Health insurance (for Canadians)
| |
Do not rely on your Canadian health insurance if you need medical treatment in a foreign country. At best, it will only cover part of your expenses. It is up to you to contact a complementary health insurance provider. Make sure you understand all of the clauses that this may include.
If you have a credit card check to see if they offer some sort of protection plan (travel insurance)
Check to make sure that your insurance company has a telephone number that is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and make sure they have an operator at all times that speaks your language.

When crossing the border, make sure you have all the proper documents. Make sure that they are not expired. If they are, keep in mind that it might take awhile to renew these documents so make sure you take care of this well in advance.

Renting a mobile home or a private condo
| |
Need help choosing a mobile home or a private condo for the holidays? Is it possible to find something beautiful and inexpensive? Pay close attention when making your holiday plans. Private condos and mobile homes. These two types of accommodations represent a major economical attraction for tourists, but pay close attention. First, you have to find someone that owns and is willing to rent and generally, this person will only have one condo or mobile home to rent.
This same owner does not have the resources necessary to make an advertising campaign as well as a reservation line without expenses. Nor does he have the personnel in place to take and make reservations. Also often, this same landlord uses his clean condo or mobile home during the periods tourists are more attracted to, therefore availability for other times of the year is most likely not possible. Often this same owner will not be able to rent to you for a short period of time since this same landlord does not have the resources necessary to do the housework between the departure and arrival of the next customer.
Another interesting point, when you pay this owner what guarantee do you have that you will be satisfied. You will have to look for somewhere else to stay at the last minute. It will not be easy and most likely very expensive since all the good places will already be occupied.
Also, something to be wary of, there are real estate agents and owners that will ask you for a big chunk of money for your next stay. You take the risk of him or her fleeing with your money and then reselling the property to someone else.
Now, obviously you do not want to spend your holiday in a place that has no service. If there is a problem, who is going to fix it? What If the toilet stops working, the television breaks down, problems with the electricity, anything could happen. Who are you supposed to call? Does the condo or mobile home offer any services? Electricity, water, cable television, T.V. in French, Internet, kitchen utensils, towels, use of a telephone, swimming pool, do you feel safe? Do you have someone you can call on 24/7?
Most mobile home parks and condo associations have very strict rules and regulations. When you rent the house or condo make sure that you are welcome. Is the person allowed to re-rent, are there restrictions for your children, do they have to be a certain age. Beware of the owner who might ask you to pass as a family member.
Now, if you find this “perfect place” it will probably be close to impossible to rent the same place for the following year. Mainly because it doesn’t make any sense financially, for an owner to keep their property vacant for so long just to rent for a short period of time once the season comes. Any owner can tell you that it is much more profitable for them to rent on a yearly basis or for them to sell the property and use the money to take themselves on a nice little vacation, (in a motel) and not have to worry about any of the problems that they might incur if renting to a tourist.
